Talking with my friend Anthony on the phone and I say no reasonable person would kill an animal if they didnt have to. Since I have a loud voice a cop and her partner over heard me and she said but bacon taste pretty good. Thats my opening, I put down the phone, I turn around and say taste cant justify violence. Animal products are totally unnecessary for good health. We eat them because we like to not because we have to. If there was a pig right here and I started smashing her in the face with a hammer what would you both do? We would stop and arrest you! Of coarse you would stop me so why is it animal abuse to do it in front of you but acceptable to do behind closed doors? They just stare at me so I keep talking. We dont need animal products for good health we can easily be healthy without them so why would you continue hurting them when you dont have to? You make a good point. Me- Animals are *persons* just like us with a wide spectrum of feelings and desires. They are subjectively aware and want to live. The male cop says to me I grew up in Puerto Rico and we had animals we farmed but we also had horses that we treated like family. He says Ive always thought it was weird that we ate some animals and loved others. Me- Its moral confusion eating one and loving another makes no rational sense and we can easily amend our misguided behaviors by being vegan. Veganism protects animals from exploitation and death. Most people agree that if we can avoid hurting someone we should. He says I wouldnt hurt someone if I dont have to. Thats great because that means youre ready to be vegan. Let me give you and your partner some literature to get you started. We talked about slavery, human rights, oppression of women, racism and I kept pointing out that all oppression is connected and to be against injustice requires veganism. This was a long and productive conversation and Im sure they will never forget some of the ideas that were presented to them
