Talladega man to serve life without parole in 2011 fatal shootings of girlfriend, her mother A Talladega man was sentenced this week to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty in the 2011 shooting deaths of his girlfriend and her mother. Anthery Leaketh Dowdell, 39, entered the guilty plea Thursday before Talladega County Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth, court records show. Dowdell was charged with capital murder after his girlfriend, 32-year-old Toni Adams, and her mother, 54-year-old Carolyn Jean Adams were found shot to death. Talladega County District Attorney Steve Giddens said that at the request of the victims family, the state was not seeking the death penalty. Around 5 a.m. July 31, 2011, Talladega police officers responded to a report of a man chasing a woman down a road while shooting at her. They found Toni Adams body lying in the road and her mothers body inside a nearby home on Swain Street. Dowdell was arrested Aug. 3, 2011, after a manhunt involving several law enforcement agencies.
