Tan Choon Ghees private sketches unveiled three years after death Of the illustrious Malaysian artists known particularly for painting streetscapes and vistas, few have produced images with the marvellous poignant charm of the late Tan Choon Ghee. Nostalgic yet dreamy, nimble yet intimate, modest yet instantly engaging, his renderings in watercolour or oil – including the famed town and harbour scenes of his native Penang – are the stuff of legends in the local lore of modern art. Now, some three years after his death, an astonishing discovery sheds invaluable new light on the artists enchanting oeuvre. A total of 86 books containing about 12,000 of Tans private sketches kept safely by his family were recently revealed in the public sphere. Together they form a precious repository that lends intriguing insight into the genius behind Tans creative process. Art collector Lee Khai, who was the first to be told of their existence, was taken aback when allowed to view the works. Click below for the full article:
