The Sri Lankan government is to regulate the social media to control the spread of information without credibility as well as to prevent its misuse and criminal activities connected to the Internet, an official of the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology said. A special committee has been appointed to study this matter and to make recommendations and guidelines on the use of platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn by Sri Lankans specially the youth, who have access to social media websites through their smart phones. The move comes in the wake of recent suicide incidents involving three school girls and a young woman and the killing of a Nugegoda businessman by a gang who used social media to establish contacts. The committee comprises representatives of the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Technology, Education and Higher Education, Cultural affairs, Criminal Investigation Department, Information communication Technology Agency, Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team and Colombo University computer school. The committee has been asked to submit a report this week. It will meet on Wednesday, March 12th to discuss matters relating to relevant regulatory guidance and enforcement actions, and other relevant laws.(Bandula) Anura S.
