The 420 metric tons of rosewood detected by the Sri Lanka Customs today valued at over Rs. 1,000 million (Us $ 7 million) is the largest detection made by any border agency against international illegal trade operations of rose wood, officials said. The detection of 3669 logs was made by the Bio-Diversity Cultural and National Heritage Protection Unit of the Customs while the stock was in Sri Lanka for trans-shipment. The logs are believed to have been smuggled from an East African country and were head to a Far Eastern country. The Customs had got a tip off that the containers could be headed in this direction and had intensified their surveillance and were able to detect 28 containers carrying the valuable wood. Anura S.
