Tasha Hubbard, a Winnipeg documentary filmmaker and professor of Native Studies at the University of Manitoba, was fascinated by this story, but she was daunted by the task of depicting it cinematically. “It’s hard to fathom the resources that would be needed to reenact this important story,” she says. The idea eventually came to her to render the story in animation, a decision she hoped would broaden the story’s accessibility and avoid the challenges of reenactment.
