Task Number 29 Completed: Get a facial/chemical peel. Over the - TopicsExpress

Task Number 29 Completed: Get a facial/chemical peel. Over the past five years, I have suffered from cystic acne on my chin. They are absolutely the worst kind of acne because they are big, they are deep, and they don’t go away. Worst of all, they leave terrible scars on my olive skin. During my bad phases, I walk around with a scarf, attempting to distract people from seeing these massive mounds. During my good phases, I stress because I know they won’t last long and I will wake up one morning soon with a new cyst. Honestly, having to constantly battle this type of acne has done a number on my confidence. And it’s frustrating because even during puberty, I didn’t have a pimple problem. Only those who go through this understand how upsetting it is because not only are the cysts ugly but they are equally as painful. After a few visits with my dermatologist, I accessed that I would only use topical creams to try to remedy the problem. I didn’t want to take oral medication because that can do all sorts of things to other parts of one’s body. And I didn’t want to get cortisone shots because it created an indentation on my skin (think Tommy Lee Jones). The last suggestion was laser therapy for the hair on my face (to help eliminate the in-grown hairs) and a microderm abrasion treatment. I started the laser over a month ago and have already seen great results (I sound like an infomercial, I know.). Today, I went in for my first chemical peel. Seeing that I was visibly nervous and hearing my concerns (“Remember, I have super super super super sensitive skin. Do the super super super super light stuff!), they started with a smaller, shorter, lighter treatment. If I respond well to this, I will go back in a month and try something stronger. I have to say, it stung a little, but truthfully, I’ve had so much irritation and pain on my face over the past few years that I’ve developed a stronger tolerance. The Doctor told me I’d “peel a little.” I think that means I’ll peel a lot. But if it removes some of the dead skin and helps lighten some of the dark scars, I’ll put up with looking like a snake in front of my students for the week. I’m excited to see the results. As I was leaving, I asked the Doctor if I looked ten years younger. She laughed and said, “No, but definitely 5.” I figure that since I bought a package of six sessions, which means I plan to go at least once a month, my skin should look like a 10 year old’s by April. I’ll let you know how it goes.
