Burn or stone some Gurudwaras Delhi church stoned, panic spreads among Christians. A Catholic prelate has demanded protection for all places of religious worship in Delhi after another Catholic church was attacked in the national capital Saturday evening. Unidentified persons threw stones at Our Lady of Fatima Forane Church Jasola, near Okhla in south Delhi, when some 200 people were attending Mass and novena inside the church. The one-year-old church belongs to the Faridabad Syro-Malabar diocese. “This is the second such incident happening in a week,” bemoaned Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara of Faridabad, who rushed to Jasola on hearing the news. The prelate said the Church leaders in Delhi are worried because the city has many churches. “We are now preparing for Christmas. There would be carol singing, Christmas Masses and all that would be affected if such attacks occur every week,” the prelate told Matters India. The archbishop, a former Vatican diplomat, wants protection for all places of worship, irrespective of their minority or majority status. “We live in a secular country. We need complete protection for all places of worship whether they belong to Christians, Hindus or Muslims. The government has to ensure conducive condition for worship,” he asserted. Narrating the Jasola incident, Parish priest Fr. Jacob Nagelimalil told Matters India he was conducting the Mass when a stone hit one of the windows and broke its glass. “The glass pieces fell inside the church, not the stone,” he said. The congregation continued with the service that was about to end when the incident occurred. “We informed the police and officers such as ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) and the SHO (station house officer) came immediately and collected details. They have also posted police guards for the church,” Father Nagelimalil said. Archbishop Bharanikulangara expressed happiness at the prompt response of the local police unlike their counterparts in Dilshad Garden. The lackadaisical attitude of the Dilshad Garden police had apparently helped destroy valuable evidences from the burned church site,” alleged the prelate who had also reached the area within hours. On December 1, some miscreants tried to rob a convent of the Congregation of Jesus in Rohini, north Delhi.
