Tax season is open now for business returns and its right around the corner for personal returns, so tonight Ive been pondering the thought many people have that the wealthy should pay more in taxes then the non-wealthy. Trying to avoid the debate over who are the wealthy or what is the income level you have to make to make to fit the description of being wealthy. I also want to avoid discussing tax loopholes that some feel the wealthy have that others dont have. Rather Id like to just focus on is it right for one class of citizens to have to bear the burden of the rest of our society. I personally feel, as Americans we live in the best country in the world by far compared to any other country there is today. We have freedoms and liberties that the majority of people throughout the world do not have. And we have a lifestyle that most people can only dream of. Does everyone in America live the same lifestyle? No, but the opportunity to achieve that lifestyle still exists for everyone. Some may debate me on that last statement but I truly feel that everyone has the opportunity, but some will struggle more than others trying to achieve that lifestyle Our tax system today is designed so that as your income grows higher and higher you will pay a higher percentage of income taxes. And for those who earn below average incomes they end up not paying any taxes. A recent study released showed that in 2010 households in the top 40% of income paid 106.2% of the total income received by the government while the bottom 40% of income households paid a -9.1%. In other words the wealth is already being shared and the wealthy are paying more than their fair share. Now for my opinion on my statement or question of is it right for one class of citizens to have to bear the burden of the rest of our society. I say No, but is it fair to expect as ones income rises you should have a greater responsibility to help those less fortunate then yourself, Yes. And I believe that many if not most of the wealthy in our society does just that. In conclusion I also believe that we all, as Americans have a responsibility to look out for one another, to help each other as we are able to do so. For some, that might mean giving from their pockets while for others giving more with their hands. We became a great nation by working together not tearing each other down or apart. Let us not forget these words: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Together we are strong, not only as a group of people but also as a nation. Just my thoughts for the night.
