Tea 101: Tea first reached Russia in the 17th century as a gift from Mongolian ruler Altyun-Khan to Tsar Michael Fedorovich and trade between the two countries started a few decades later. At the time, supplies were transported to Russia by camel caravans along the ‘Great Tea Road’ from China across the Gobi Dessert to Mongolia where wares were inspected and repackaged and then had another laborious 16-18 month journey to Russia. It is said that ‘Russian Caravan’ tea acquired its slightly smoky flavor from the smoldering fires that kept the travelers warm at night.
