Tea in Doi Mae Salong, Thailand Terrace tea is found in great abundance here in the golden triangle. Taiwanese and Chinese tea drinkers are major buyers of the delicate Oolong cha found in great abundance. When you drink Thai Oolong, you are drinking in the land, the climate, the tea mountains, and the people. These tea marvelous tea mountains (doi) are situated atop the northern most region of Thailand that shares borders with Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar (Burma). The Kuomintang army was granted permanent residence and land from the Thai Monarchy after being expelled from Myanmar in the 1960s. With their arrival came the intricate knowledge of tea cultivation from China. Their rich cultural heritage is thriving, and more than welcomed - forever changing the delicate Thai landscape. It is common to find the Chinese language being spoken interspersed with Thai. Combine this with the vibrancy of the ethnolinguistic Karen people (indigenous Thai Hilltribes) that make for a profoundly cultural spectacle - not to mention an indelible foodie experience - whilst leaving their cultural footprint. For this, we are forever thankful for the confluence of cultures found here - a snapshot in time as we slip into both the past and future together...
