“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” (Mk - TopicsExpress

“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” (Mk 4:38) Don’t you care for me? We often hear such reproachful words between parent and child or husband or wife. When we are deeply hurt we immediately question whether we matter to the other. In today’s Gospel, the apostles are almost accusing Jesus, as if he wanted them to drown and die. After seeing the many wonders Jesus performed, is this a remark Jesus deserves from the apostles? Emotional blackmail! In Mk 6:45-52 Jesus even goes to the extent of walking on water to save them from the storm. In this case, Jesus is right there in the boat; yet they are afraid. But let us examine how we react when stormy winds blow in our lives. In time of trouble, do we humbly wait in faith for the Lord to help? Are we confident he will not let us down? What is our method of coping with panic? Some of us may actually reject God; others may just recite prayers mechanically or go for one retreat after another. Indeed we easily forget that God dwells among us and in us – in our very heart. That he cares for us. Faith is something that needs to be inculcated and built up. It requires plenty of patience and peace within. FRUIT: In troublesome situations, can we remind ourselves that Jesus is always with us? Then, instead of accusing him, we can calm down and be comforted by his presence.
