Teaching Ordinal Numbers (1st 2nd 3rd...), First, Last, Before and After: *Have your child count and line up 10 action figurines, stuffed animals or dolls. Put one of their DVD movies to the left and pretend their toys are in line to purchase tickets to the movie. Introduce and count each toy using ordinal numbers several times. Have your child repeat after you. Ask your child the following questions: •Who is first in line? Who is last? •Who is 2nd 3rd 4th...? •Who is before (name of toy)? •Who is after (name of toy)? •If (name of first toy) is 1st is there anyone before them? Explain why. •If (name of last toy) is last is there anyone after them? Explain why. •Who will get their ticket the fastest? •Who will have to wait the longest? Do this activity again switching the DVD to the right but having the toys remain in the same position. *Counting ordinal numbers out loud as a countdown, as well as skip counting, for your child to respond to one of your requests will get them reciting ordinal numbers independently in no time.
