Teak : strong, beautiful, unique and important material of furniture Teak / Tectona Grandis is one of tropical forests trees which belongs to the family Lamiaceae (classification in Verbenaceae). Teak are native to South and Southeast Asia plantation. The trees are large, straight-trunked, grow up to 30-40 m / 90 – 120 feet high, produce high quality wood. The leaf are large and usually scale of in summertime. Their life up to age of 100 years. Teak is known for ability to withstand in any changing of weather or seasson and strong winds. Teak usually have oil in their cambium/heartwood. This oil makes the tree more waterproof than other trees. So teak tree have protection from decay, insects and bacteria. The overplus of teak is they have thick fibers so it make easier to cut and then to carve in any model and shape. Because of this special characteristic, teak wood become the first choice to use for various types of furniture. The teak trees are found in the south east forests can reach height up to 150 m, which have characterictic reddish green, coarse leave and brown to gold cambium/heartwood. Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Philippine and Malaysia are the main producer of teak wood in the world. The best quality of teak in the world is Indonesian teak wood. The conservation of teak in Indonesia is managed by the government that is Perum Perhutani. The largest producer of teak in Indonesia is in Java. The geographi and weather in Java island is perfect for teak trees plantation. In Java there are many manufactures and furniture workers of teak wood for furniture, both indoor and outdoor furniture. The workers have special skill to make beautiful and unique products of teak furniture. To get the best quality of teak wood, it is important have to pay attention the process of uptake. The old of the teak trees, up to age 40 years are ready for the best teak wood. In fact the older of trees, the quality more better. Also the wood must be dry, after having drying process, the wood is ready to be shaped in any model of furniture or other product of wood. In India, because of the durability, teak wood is also used to make doors, windows and frames, except to make furniture products. The most important characteristic of teak is the strength in all condition of weather and ability to withstand in any changing of seasson. Teak is also resistance to decay and to repel insects. This is the reason that teak is the main material to make any shape and model of furniture, indoor and outdoor, traditional and modern furniture. Because of the durability, although the teak put in outdoor place, teak is often used for material of shipbuilding such as cruise ships. Another charateristic of teak are the elasticity and lot of fiber, so it is easier to produce goods well. Another reason for teak is beautiful is the special oil which content in the cambium/heartwood, so it makes teak wood looks radiant, it can make teak resistant to sunlight even in outdoor place for long period of time. Also teak has anti bacterial characteristic so do not make the wood brittle. Nevertheless sometimes teak furnitures need treatment or polishing or certain varnish on some parts of them to maintenance the natural beauty of teak it self.
