Technique Thursdays Best Laid Plans “Let’s put together a Treatment Plan.” What is a treatment plan? A treatment plan is assembled when multiple procedures or visits are needed to resolve a dental issue. Understanding the stages of treatment can help you to be in control of your treatment, identify important symptoms and milestones of recovery and have peace of mind about restoring your oral health. A treatment plan is simply a list of services that are needed to resolve particular problems or a breakdown of how to proceed in resolving a problem. For example, a perio scaling and root planing (a gum disease treatment) is best not completed in a single visit because it will impair the ability to eat and drink comfortably afterward and take upwards of four hours to complete. To accommodate the patient’s needs, a treatment plan would be created to schedule the phases of treatment. Regardless of the problem, there are five main parts to any treatment plan. · Identify the problem · Establish the treatment required to correct the problem · Estimate the time need to meet the goal of correcting the problem · Prioritize order of treatment · Arrange financial commitments and insurance assistance Once a problem has been identified, we determine the necessary course of action needed and line out the steps and the amount of time between steps. Often, more than one step can be performed in the same visit but occasionally, multiple visits are necessary to allow you to continue to eat and talk comfortably between treatments. Having a plan is never a bad idea. Working from a treatment plan can help keep you informed, organized and prepared for successful treatment.
