Ted Schubel with Info to Go - The State Fair of Virginia is more than just rides, funnel cakes and fried food. Agriculture plays a big role. Caroline County Farm Bureau President Lynwood Broaddus said the State Fair gives him the chance to talk with kids about where their food comes from. They see food in the grocery store, but they dont know where things come from. We explain to them that corn can be ground up for taco chips, cereal or even used for plastic bags. Broaddus said the cost of farming continues to rise and that has brought about some changes. The cost of a tractor or combine can be hundreds of thousands of dollars. The only way a person gets into farming today is by marrying into it or by an inheritance. Broaddus said pick-your-own operations are becoming the new face of farming. You can start from nothing and develop a nice business. The State Fair continues thru Sunday at the Meadow Event Park.
