Teen and Tween Historians...Our term began with a venture into the history of the British Empire and particularly looking at the East India Company. Before we began, we looked at logos of some of the most famous Multinational Corporations in the world and had a discussion about them, how they began and why they have become so successful. We then looked at how only a small number of corporations own most of the companies in the world and followed the web of their power. Having previously studied the adventures of explorers who opened up trading in the world, we learnt that in the 17th century a group of English merchants decided to form a company to pursue trade with the East Indies, but ended up mainly trading with the Indian subcontinent, China, North-west Frontier and Balochistan (part of Pakistan). This company became so successful it accounted for half of the worlds trade in basic commodities that included cotton, sil, indigo dye, salt, saltpetre, tea and opium! This company also ruled the beginnings of the British Empire in India and even had its own army. The company helped make London an important shipbuilding centre. By 1618, the East India Company was one of the largest employers of civilian labour in London.
