Tell your child just how important they are to you - the way they are now and the way they want to be in the future. Tell them that you only hope for them to do things that make them happy. Even though you might hope for a lawyer, let your child be a gardener and if you wish for a grandchild, let it be their decision to decide whether there will be any. If you hope to see a daughter-in-law one day, let them know that a son-in-law would be just as welcome. Everybody has dreams, and its important not to try to live them ruthlessly through others, especially your children. Remember to remind them that they should aim high for their dreams without pushing other people down. Children and young people need boundaries. Love doesnt. When I was still in primary school, I was afraid of my parents reaction when I decided that i wont go to military service. A few years later I was afraid of what would happen when I told them that I am gay. My mum and dad had never told me their opinions on these matters, so I assumed that they would never accept me for who I am. Because of this I often imagined what life without my parents would be like. What itd feel like when they wouldnt want to see me anymore. Its always better to talk too much - even saying things that may seem obvious - than to be silent. We cant expect others to be able to read our minds.
