Temperatures have the opportunity to tank overnight with the core of the cold air mass over the area along with light winds/clear skies which is an optimal radiational cooling set-up. Have some concerns that many areas may drop into the upper 30s except for within about 2 miles of the lakefront. Areas further inland towards Lowell, Hebron and even Valparaiso could actually see MID 30s! No frost headlines have been hoisted at this time, but there is certainly a potential for patchy light frost overnight, especially across southern half of Lake and Porter counties away from the warmer lake influence. While any frost should be light and limited due to the warm ground layer, it isnt a bad idea to cover up or bring in sensitive outdoor plants for tonight to be safe. Odds are, theyll survive, but its a close call and theres always that chance that temps could go even lower. Its incredibly cold for this time of the year, weve not seen 30-degree temps prior to Sept. 15th in 107 years! Believe it or not, its attached to the same pattern we were in last winter which has never really let go... The reason we had such a cool but stormy summer.
