Temperatures were mild compared to other Battle of Flowers - TopicsExpress

Temperatures were mild compared to other Battle of Flowers parades, but Metro Health still issued a Level III heat outlook late Thursday afternoon, with expectations of at least two consecutive days with heat indexes between 90 and 105 degrees. High temperatures during the parade never cracked 90 degrees and the heat index stayed a degree below. But a mild spring made it feel a little worse. It was pretty hot, said Jimmy Ayala, who participated in the parade with the trail riders. I think the mist this morning put a lot of humidity in the air. Thats what made it really hot. It is really hot and humid, and the sun is horrible, added Anna Harvey, who sat along the parade route. Ayala, like many of the participants, had on a costume not built for 90-degree weather. Many local high school bands wore thick uniforms usually seen on football fields in the fall. There were a variety of ways they kept their cool Friday afternoon. Im spraying the kids with the water so they dont get too hot and get heatstroke or anything, said Mayan Holmes, a Randolph High School Student. He saved our lives, exclaimed Emily Gonzales, a Randolph cheerleader. He hydrated us! Joe Noriega, a Madison High School booster, used a pump sprayer on students along the 2.6-mile route. Easy, convenient, said Noriega. Just fill it up with melted ice from the ice chest. Trying to keep my girls and band members cooled off a little bit. Its been hot out here. You just hope that he comes back and sprays you, said Lydia Cruz, a Madison cheerleader. Otherwise youre like, Please spray me, please spray me. But you dont always get sprayed. But not everyone had help staying hydrated. Anna Harveys friend was treated by EMTs for heat exhaustion. She was saying that she probably had heat stroke and sure enough she did, said Harvey. Im ready to have it too, so we want to go home. Temperatures for the final parade, the Flambeau on Saturday night, are expected to be in the mid-80s at start time. #KSATnews #KSATnews
