Temporary Exhibit About the End of Dutch New-Guinea at Bronbeek, Arnhem, Netherlands! ~October 4, 2014 through January 15, 2015~ Indisch Herinneringscentrum (The Indo Memorial Center) and Museum Bronbeek present: ~With a Silent Drum: F. Springer and the End of New-Guinea~ In 1962, The Netherlands was forced to say goodbye to its territory, Dutch New-Guinea. The exhibition With a Silent Drum: F. Springer and the end of New-Guinea” is about Carel Jan Schneider (1932-2011), who as Comptroller for the Civil Service with the Papuans worked in this last piece of the Dutch tropics in the Pacific”. Under the pseudonym F. Springer, Schneider wrote stories that were greatly inspired by his experiences on this immense island. In the exhibition are (moving) images, objects and documents from Schneider’s private collection. The exhibition takes the visitor to the Baliem Valley, an isolated area in the central highlands of New-Guinea, where Schneider lived with his family for two years. It focuses on the life and work of civil servant Schneider and his contacts with local Papuans, the Dani people, in the last years of Dutch rule in the valley. Curator of the exhibition is Liesbeth Dolk, the biographer of F. Springer. Carel Jan Schneider had to return to the Netherlands in 1962, but the Papuans and their land remained in his heart. Shortly after his return, he wrote “With a Silent Drum”, a reflection of his experiences as Comptroller of Baliem, in just a few weeks. At his request, this novel was never published, but just before his death, Schneider finished the text with renewed enthusiasm. In 2012, ‘With a Silent Drum” was published in a journal by Querido. Schneider himself reveals, in the posthumously-published book’s forward, why the book was released in 2012 rather than in 1962. Along with his other stories about New-Guinea, this book forms a guide to the exhibition. In 2012, fifty years after the independence of New-Guinea, Tong Tong Foundation presented this original production in the Cultural Pavilion of the 54th Tong Tong Fair. The exhibition was customized by sculptor Monique Kreefft and supplemented with a few display cases, specifically for this reprise at the Bronbeek Museum by the Indisch Herinneringcentrum. The exhibition enhances the permanent exhibition The Story of Indië’ at Museum Bronbeek. Photo credits: © Erven C. J.
