Effective communication will help you build and foster strong relationships with your children. Parents who communicate effectively with their children are more likely to have children who are willing to do what they are told. Here are a few important communication tips for effective parenting:- 1. You must be a good listener. Learn how to really listen. Listening is a very important skill and it’s really worth learning and practicing. 2. Use good eye contact with them at all times. When you do this, you show them that you are involved and interested. 3. Physically get down to the level of smaller children when communicating with them. 4. Don’t interrupt them when they are talking instead you can offer them a smile or a gentle nod to assure them that you are listening. 5. Ask them open ended questions rather than questions that can be answered with a yes or no. 6. Repeat back to them what you heard them say. It will offer an opportunity for clarification and will help ensure that you are not misinterpreting the message they are trying to get across. 7. Avoid overreacting to anything they say or do. Try to respond as calmly as you can at all times. 8. Whenever they express a desire to talk, give them your undivided attention. If you are occupied at the time, ask them to come back at a different time. 9. Schedule regular family meetings/times to talk and communicate with one another.
