Ten Things You Probably Did Not Know About Disney ... (my favorite place for many years) Ten Things You Probably Did Not Know About Disney .... Secret Suite Walt Disney built an apartment in the upper levels of Cinderella’s Castle for his family to stay in when visiting Orlando. In 2006, it was turned it into a deluxe suite that is awarded to a randomly selected family each day. The residence boasts 24-karat gold tile floors and a magic mirror that turns into a television. A Dark Debut Disneyland’s opening day in 1955 is known in park lore as “Black Sunday” due to the many mishaps that occurred, including a gas leak in Fantasyland, melting asphalt on Main Street and dozens of broken rides. The reviews were terrible and people predicted the now almost 60-year-old park would close within months. A Clean Cut Cast Hoping to steer clear of the creepy carnival look, Disneyland issued a decree in the 1950’s that forbid employees from growing long locks or facial hair. The ban was amended in 2000 to permit neat mustaches and again in 2012 to allow beards kept under a quarter inch in length. Soul patches and muttonchops are still off limits. The Size of a City Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida covers over 40 square miles, which is roughly the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands. The resort’s lawnmowers clip 450,000 miles of grass a year—that’s the equivalent of 18 trips around the globe at the equator. Mickeys Maintenance You’d have to complete a load of wash a day for 52 years to equal the 285,000 pounds Walt Disney World launders every 24 hours. The custodial department across the country at Disneyland is busy as well hauling away 30 tons of trash every single night, which adds up to 12 million pounds a year. A Musical Milestone While notable for being Disney’s first animated feature length film, 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, holds another distinction: the movie’s music album was the first soundtrack ever released to the general public. Several of the songs, which included Whistle While You Work and Heigh-Ho, were hit singles at the time. Pigging Out Guests at Florida’s Disney World gobble 10 million hamburgers, 6 million hotdogs and 9 million pounds of French fries each year. They also drink a whopping 75 million Cokes. Over in Anaheim, churros are a hit, with almost 3 million fried dough pastries consumed every 365 days. Souvenir Stats Were you to lay them end to end, there are enough Mickey Mouse ears purchased in Orlando every year to stretch 175 miles, almost the distance between New York City and Baltimore, Maryland. The park also sells enough character t-shirts to cover the backs of every resident in the state of Montana. Privileged Partying The only place to buy booze inside Disneyland is Club 33, an exclusive restaurant and bar that Walt originally built to entertain friends. Now frequented by celebrities, the club has an 800-person wait list, costs $10,000 a year and has a $25,000 initiation charge. That hefty fee it just to get through the doors; it doesn’t even include food and drink. Left Behind Since 1971, about 1.65 million pairs of sunglasses have been turned in to the Disney World lost and found. While that may sound steep, eyewear isn’t the most commonly abandoned article: 6 million autograph books are found each year. A glass eye, prosthetic leg and potty trainer, all which were eventually claimed, are amongst the oddest items ever discovered on park grounds.
