Ten midfield options for Man Utd in January As Louis van Gaal looks to continue his rebuilding of Manchester United, his team could get reinforcements in the middle of the pitch. 1. Kevin Strootman - Long-admired by Van Gaal, Dutch midfielder Strootman has just returned from a long injury lay-off. 2. Florian Thauvin - One of the up-and-coming performers in Europe, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has scored three goals and four assists to take Marseille to the top of Ligue 1 ahead of big-spending PSG. 3. Claudio Marchisio - Turning 29 in January, Marchisio is not as young as many on the list but has plenty of experience at the top level. He was even scouted on Uniteds website two years ago! 4. Marco Reus - Reus, who missed the entire World Cup with injury, reportedly has a buyout clause of around 25 million euros in the summer. The attacking-minded player would add pace and creativity to Uniteds midfield and link with the strikers and, while Dortmund would be loath to lose him, a big offer in January could ease the parting blow they would likely suffer in summer anyway. 5. Georginio Wijnaldum - The 24-year-old is a key component of the PSV side currently leading the Eredivisie and played his part at the World Cup in summer, scoring in the third-place playoff game. Wijnaldum may not have experience in what UEFA deem the top five European leagues, but if the United manager thinks the playmaker can improve his side going forward he may be a cheaper option for the team.
