Ten years on: Feeling reflective today thinking about the tsunami that killed so many. Its one of those events that many people remember where they were when it happened: I was living in Thailand. I remember coming down in the morning (actually it was afternoon as it had been a particularly heavy night the night before, but thats a story for a different post!), putting the kettle on, saying morning to the resident tarantula (that lived on my kitchen wall), putting the tv on to bbc world: all things I did like clockwork everyday. And it was only then that I saw what had happened, and how badly Thailand had been affected. I turned my mobile on (no landline in my shop) and it went MENTAL: messages from loved ones distressed by worry about my safety. Boxing Day was spent getting back to everyone and reassuring friends and family that I was ok. Then in the coming days and weeks Samui was inundated with tourists and natives seeking safety. Those that had lost everything and were accompanied with harrowing tales of the wave. Crime increased on the island and I was mugged myself shortly afterwards by being kicked off my motorbike. In addition to my handbag I lost a lot of skin on the road outside the chamber as I skidded along Ban Rak. The police asked me to come down for a line-up they had organised a while later, but how could I help when all I could identify was the foot that kicked my back wheel out at 50km per hour....I did not see any of the faces. I like to think it was a gang from a tsunami-hit village on the west coast, rather than the attempted murder charge that was a friends view..... Ultimately they needed my stuff more than me. That was the beginning of the end of my Thailand adventures and I soon sold my business and sent whatever stock was left over to tsunami-stricken villages, by dedicated individuals that were driving across the mainland with supplies. Wow ten years. Dedicating my practice today to all who were, and still are, affected by that wall of destructive water that landed ten years ago and changed the lives of so many xxx 💛🙏💙
