Terrible electrical storms last night reminded me of this, one of my favorite passages from HAVING OUR SAY: We used to have these terrific thunderstorms in North Carolina that would scare the life out of you...We all sat on the floor and Papa said, Just be quiet and let God do His work....When the storm was over, there was the most beautiful rainbow. Papa said, Look, children, it is a gift from God.....We were certain God had hung it in the sky, just for us. (Bessie Delany) Now what you dont know is that this is what Bessie said in response to my question, What was your first memory? Imagine my delight when this was the answer that she gave! I remember how she smiled and said, Oh! I hadnt thought of that in a long time!
