Terribly sad to see a New England lightning death. Its so easy to underestimate how far away lightning can strike (10 miles from the storm), and how fast the storm is closing in. In recent years, while researching lightning deaths, I realized two overwhelming facts: 1) there is no safe place outside, and 2) there is a huge component of bad luck involved, but respecting #1 nearly always mitigates the risk of #2. My thoughts and sympathy are with the family and friends of this victim, and my hope is that her death will not have been in vain - that we will all increase caution and take precautions when threatening weather approaches. bostonherald/news_opinion/local_coverage/2014/09/ipswich_lightning_strike_victim_dies
