Tescos reply to being challenged on their using the workfare scheme: Tesco Hi Julia, We dont and have never taken part in the scheme youve mentioned. We run the Launch programme in conjunction with The Princes Trust, which aims to help 500 young unemployed people gain skills they need to help them get a job. This training programme offers unemployed young people a chance to learn about the retail industry and build their confidence and skills for work. The idea of this programme is that many young people will go on to get a job with Tesco while others will be helped into jobs elsewhere in the industry, with mentoring support from The Prince’s Trust. The Trust wouldnt be running this programme if it wasnt of great benefit to the young people the charity is working to help. Most young people who join these programmes are unemployed and claiming benefits. They are able to continue receiving their benefits for the duration of the programme. The Prince’s Trust is independent charity and our courses are not compulsory. Most young people refer themselves to The Trust and our programmes are over-subscribed. Young people who are not claiming benefits do not receive payment to attend this voluntary programme. Prince’s Trust programmes are proven to work and many participants go on to earn a wage after attending the free courses. Regards,
