Thank you Adrienne for your counter-response, totally hit the remark. It also reveals how even within our Native community there are individuals who lack empathy for their native brothers and sisters who do have to face the consequences of appropriation and caricature stereotypes. Instead of being supportive, its an ego boost to agree with the hegemony, they dont want to reconsider that priviledge. Thank you too for affirming that Native students feel a huge brunt of it, and when I listen to Frank Walns AbOriginal song reclaiming a sense of self and affirming I am not your mascot I know Im not alone. There will always be those that lack empathy, even within our diverse community of Indian country. Instead of tearing this work down to deconstruct the imposed and forced expectations from outsiders, those brothers and sisters should consider the damage its doing. Us making waves and them saying to stop it is really them insecure in accepting that change will take place. Its already started. You cant oppress a people who are no longer afraid. The ones still afraid, the ones who dont care are obsolete and in their bones they know it.
