Thank you Keana Reinu and Grace Bridgman for my Ice Bucket Challenge nominations. Instead of entering this international wet t-shirt contest, Ive decided to do something a little different. I recognise that the trend is for a worthy cause and I have made my contributions on alsa.org/ - unlike many people on my news feed; I support people taking part in this initiative if their default was to do nothing at all. But I am always a supporter of people doing more; and the notion that clicking like on a Facebook petition, or posting a video of you covered in ice is enough to be considered altruism is truly disturbing. It further distances social problems and while I know that people naturally shy away from causes that seem too big, I think the best approach is to stop thinking in statistics and start thinking in individuals. Its not a percentage going homeless and hungry every night; its a person. I found a really great charity that provides clean drinking water and associated infrastructure to developing countries. Ive made a monetary donation on their website charitywater.org/ and applied to be a volunteer that works and reports on their projects in Uganda, Liberia an Ethiopia. Unfortunately they only accept people over the age on 21 so I will be on a waiting list until then. In the mean time, I will continue to work on whatever projects I can.
