Thank you Mom. My husband and I have had a household full of animals for the whole time we have been together, with the numbers inching up over time. Mom always watched from afar with keen interest, and asked after the clowder. She was not a cat lover, but made blankets, bought toys and beds for our babies. After she retired, Mom started her own fur family, and then added to it with a handful of adoptions of rescued Japanese Chin dogs. They were her heart. Her rescues came from various situations, and each came with their own baggage. We frequently discussed the health and welfare of all our respective babies. Mom was an RN and interested in all things medical, I am a biology lover; we often discussed medical and veterinary issues, treatments and the like of our fur companions. In June we started to foster through Kitten Angels; and our first group was a lovely bunch of kittens that needed some human loving to make them social. We have poured our love and affection into these babies, and they have become snuggle bunnies in return, and so our work has made it so that they can find homes with people that will love them right back. We were called upon most recently to provide a home for the lovely Life on Mars and her five babies. Two of her kittens, Major Tom and Hunky Dory, need to be bottle fed; a daunting responsibility to care-givers. They are very congested, and that needs careful watch, with an occasional breathing treatment. One of these two, Hunky Dory, also was born with some type of oral cleft. This means that while he was developing, a quirk in either genetics or environment made it so that he is lacking an upper lip, and possibly on examination we will discover it is more than just that. Right now this means that we have to use care while he nurses from the bottle so he doesnt aspirate any into his lungs. Later, he may be alright with what he has, or depending on the involvement he made require surgery when he gets older to continue to survive. Starman and Ziggy Stardust are just lovely gorgeous kittens. Moonage Daydream seems to have an -ish with one of his legs, and though I have my ideas, I will not share an uneducated diagnosis until he has been evaluated by the Vet. I do believe he will be fine in the long run, he will just be different in his movements and requirements. Man, he is a beauty to boot. Sometimes in the late hours, when we are sleep deprived and rather cranky with ourselves and each other, we wonder why we didnt get the perfect kittens. Today I realized the truth of the matter. We DID get the perfect kittens. Perfect for us, perfect for what we have to give, and perfect in their looks and their abilities. We lost my Mom in March of this year. She would have chatted with me constantly about Hunky Dory, Moonage Daydream and Major Tom. She would have oohed and ahhed over Mars, Ziggy and Starman also... But she would have had a passion for the need babies, Mom always loved the need babies. So I finally realized, Mom sent me these babies, because she knew they needed me. But also, that I needed them just as much. Thank you Mom.
