Thank you for my time at the Chicago Tribune. Its been 15 years there -- and 20 in reporting mostly in the Chicago area -- during which time Ive gotten to meet and cover so many interesting people, and carry those stories to the greatest readers any of us at the Tribune could ask for. My last day is a week from today. I have this business degree, you see, and endless curiosity about why things work, and in making them work better, and the world needs more consultants. The previous chapter of my life is enough to surround a long (and still thrilling, Sarah!) marriage, two bright children, two masters degrees, two wars, two hurricanes, four continents, dozens of states, political campaigns both small and largish, Elvis impersonators, Lincoln impersonators, gravitas impersonators, Cookie Monster, a few startups including Trib Nation and Blue Sky Innovation, an industry at its top, at its bottom ... and gratefully, at its recovery, at least here. Thats in no small part to the relationship built between the Tribune and our readers -- many of them you. Thank you. Its a leap of faith to rekindle a relationship; Im moved to know first-hand how strong it is. Thanks also to the Tribune, where I grew up from resident, to obituary writer, to general assignment grinder. Its been my window to the world as its been yours. I saw the sun set on the Tigris and the stars shine over the Euphrates. I felt the humid desperation in the Superdome after Katrina, and the hot blast of Hornets rocketing off of carriers. I read the Great Books out of the newsroom library, learned languages, and saw how much community matters. Other people passed me the mantle; so many carry it still with such grace; others take it up with such admirable purpose. Heres to other opportunities, and all of our futures.
