Thank you for your objection - glad to see that you read the material - and that gives me a chance to answer the objection. Luke 2: 44- 46 comes to mind in this context especially - since the comment is under a post which shows Jesus portrayed in a scene from the Bible. With that in mind, one perfect litmus test of political correctness is this: When we feel compelled to create new standards that would result in the Holy Family or some other innocent Bibilcal character from Boaz to Simon Boanerges being jailed for this or that, (imagine the headline: Mary and Joseph - Couple From Nazareth - Jailed For Child Abuse - Son Jesus Abandoned At Temple For Three Days At Age 12) it just might be a clear indication that we have pushed political correctness way too far. What is interesting (and ABSURD) is that the mother who cares for these kids round the clock was arrested and charged with neglect; while the father, who left his children unattended for years - actually since these kids were born - faces no penalty at all, and has never paid a penny in child support! This lady did not leave her kids at home due to any negligence on her part, but due to the fact that she was trying to do something for her children which required her immediate assistance; and she could not have done this at home - nor could she have taken the children with her. She also didnt have the option of contracting for help at that time, since a reliable babysitter cannot be obtained at the drop of a hat (and attempting to do that hastily may have had much worse results); she faced an emergency of some type. We dont know that these kids were left unattended - there have been monitoring devices (including crib monitors) since the 1970s, which enable parents to be in the next room. The mother was during this entire time LOOKING AFTER HER CHILDREN, not neglecting them. The parent who WAS arrested for leaving the children unattended was, ironically, arrested because SHE WAS THERE - she rushed right back from a corner store which was a stones throw from her apartment; and she was gone no longer than she might have been if she had used the bathroom in her own home with the door closed. The parent who was NOT arrested for leaving the children unattended is the parent who was NEVER THERE. Now, if a parent leaves their children unattended and harm results, then this parent may be to blame for that situation of harm - and it is quite possible for a mom or dad to leave their kids unattended within the same home or even in the same room long enough for them to get into trouble. (Most situations of harm in which a child is left unattended and harm DOES result, have to do with parents leaving their kids in CARS while the parent goes shopping or even in some cases bar hopping - that IS extreme behavior, and the child IS at risk in that type of situation - but that is not what we are talking about here. If a parent leaves their child unattended for a few minutes at home, and NO HARM results (as in this situation), then we ought to give the benefit of the doubt to that parent. Why in the world should we want to extend the power of the State, the news media, community judgment and the school apparatus to reach into that home and break it up? It doesnt make any sense whatsoever for Government to inflict great harm and embarrassment (or even irreparable harm) in order to remedy a situation in which no harm at all has been done initially. As they say at the garage: If it aint broke, dont fix it! The issue here is not the mothers conduct, but the mountain-from-molehill, Robocop-like speculative overreach of Government all the way down the line. This mother is not a danger to herself, her children or anyone else. But the Government which falsely claims that she is, is in fact the real danger to all of us. If Government were to apply the same standards across the board as they did in this case, over half the parents in the country would be slammed with criminal records for the same level of conduct or worse. That simply doesnt make sense; when the cure is worse than the disease.
