FORT LEE, Va. – In today’s world of socializing on the run and communicating via emails, texts and “likes,” maybe a personal, face-to-face “thank you” would be just the ticket for a special occasion. One such occasion in November is Military Family Month, appropriately set in the month of Thanksgiving. What better time to thank a military member, veteran, military spouse or child for their service and personal sacrifice. “Every day, commissary employees worldwide appreciate the sacrifices and service of our military and their families, and we strive to deliver a benefit worthy of their service,” said Defense Commissary Agency Director and CEO Joseph H. Jeu. “During this observance, we just want to tip our hats to say, ‘Thank you for your service.’ ” Gestures of thanks can take on many forms. Consider these salutes to military family members: • Give a personal, face-to-face thank-you during this special month. • Anyone can purchase a Commissary Gift Card to give the gift of groceries. They are available either at the front end of any commissary or via Internet at commissaries in denominations of $25 or $50. They can be donated to any installation chaplain or family services office. • Offer a military neighbor a simple favor, whether it’s raking leaves; sprinkling pet-friendly salt on icy sidewalks; dropping off a pot of chili or fresh-baked loaf of bread; or volunteering childcare while the parents get some errands done or just enjoy a little leisure time on their own. • See someone in uniform? Thank them for their service or surprise them with a free beverage or dessert if they are in line behind you. No matter what store you’re in, on or off base, invite them and their family to move ahead of you in line.
