Thank you to Paula Mosely Whaley for nominating Deborah Mathewuse! I want to nominate Deborah Mathewuse of Jackson County Florida 911 for following up on a 911 hangup call. On January 7, 2014 - Jackson County received an open line/hang up call. There was very faint background noise on the 30 second call The GPS location on the call was in the middle of the Chattahoochee River in Seminole County Georgias jurisdiction. After notifying our office of the hangup call and location, Dispatcher Matthewuse then contacted Verizon for subscriber information and then made contact with the subscriber. The subscriber then told Dispatcher Matthewuse that her 15 year old son and a 17 year old friend were duck hunting on the River, and the temp that morning was around 22 degrees. Dispatcher Matthewuse then contacted our office with this additional information. After dispatching our units to check the area, our office learned that a third teen (16 year old) was with them. The subscribers husband was able to provide the area where his son liked to hunt. The 15 year old and 16 year old were located on a small island where they swam after their boat capsized. Unfortunately the 17 year old chose to stay in the water with his boat and drowned as a result of hypothermia. His body was recovered later that afternoon. Had Dispatcher Mathewuse not followed up on the open line/hang up call, the other two teens would have died also from being wet and in sub-freezing weather.
