Thank you to all who attended the Town Hall last night. We had a nice turnout and I think some great dialogue was started but we have such a long way to go and need to ensure the dialogue continues. Susan Pulsipher said she was aiming for the end of Summer (August time frame) before school is back in session. What would you like to see happen at these future meeting and how to we enforce accountability and action to drive us toward a solution? I would love to know your thoughts about last night? Did you receive the answers you wanted? What questions did you walk away with? Did you find this meeting helpful? I think the common consensus that all (or almost all) is that everyone is upset/angered/frustrated by the over reach of the federal government into our local schools and the strings that are attached when we receive federal funding. I will be posting the audio I recorded later today, but here is a list of some of the concerns: -Lack of Math textbooks -Are our kids the guinea pigs? - Parents (many with strong math and engineering backgrounds) are not even able to help their kids with homework that is not how the teacher taught me - Integrated Math standards -SAGE testing -AIR - psychometric data FERPA laws - privacy of students data vs State data privacy laws (what trumps what?) - Not developmentally age appropriate -Have we tested by grade level? -Why are we grading schools during the SAGE setup period? -HB15 (2012) and HB34 (2014) and behavior based assessments - Teachers and parents cant see tests - Math issues still not addressed after 2 years or more of discussion/complaints - How do we get rid of Common Core? -Dont compare us to other countries - America is different than any other country - We are not seeing changes, what can we do? -Elected representatives seem unresponsive -Is the Common Core going to be there into college or will be be replaced by something else? -Disconnect between the standards and implementation - Feels rushed without parent input - Concurrent enrollment issues with integrated math - What do we (patrons) want? - NCLB Waiver
