Thank you to everyone who came out to the public hearing last week - TopicsExpress

Thank you to everyone who came out to the public hearing last week and the open meeting yesterday at the RI Public Utilities Commission. As National Grid had requested, the PUC approved an electric rate hike, although modified it to 14% spread out over the year, rather than 24% over 6 months that had been initially requested. We know this will be a blow to so many Rhode Islanders and at the George Wiley Center we will be hearing from even more who are living without utilities or are struggling on the brink of shut-off. While the PUC may have had limited options in their decision-making, our concerns have been heard and it will take a continued cooperative effort to make the changes that are needed, to fight for affordable utility access, and to strengthen the public in public utilities. The George Wiley Center has been fighting for utility justice since its inception, named after RI welfare rights activist George Wiley and founded by Henry Shelton over 30 years ago. I am inspired by past struggles and am proud to continue organizing together on this important issue. Stay tuned for next steps, your participation will be needed to win justice. Happy holidays and looking forward to the positive changes our collective actions can bring in the New Year!
