Thank you to everyone who left birthday greetings on my wall! I had a glorious time in Colorado, though that is probably the last time I will drive the route from Durango to Ouray. The million dollar highway is a nerve wracking road, with massive cliffs going up one side and continuing down the other side. Not only are there no shoulders or guard rails, but bits of the white lines defining the lane are gone on the outer lane. It was built as a wagon trail for the miners in that area. Beautiful, but intimidating. A Google search has confirmed what I suspected...there is no margin for error on that road. Any vehicle mishap has a high probability of being fatal. The miners, homesteaders and trappers that settled in that area had to be some tough folk, probably with shortened life expectancy. My dog was a nervous wreck for most of the trek; panting, hyperventilating and shaking violently. I think she may have PTSD as a result of our recent accident. She also doesnt like thunderstorms so the afternoon storm as we drove through Wolf Creek Pass yesterday was a challenge in terms of keeping her out of my lap. She is very happy to be home and shows no indication of doing anything other than nap today. The alternate route back through Gunnison, Saguache and Pagosa Springs was scenic and far less stressful. :)
