Thank you to photographer and biochemist, Teresita Gonzalez who visited Washburn University on Wednesday October 1. She discussed CHARITY HOSPITAL, a photo series chronicling the story of the now, defunct Hospital de Clinicas in Asuncion, Paraguay to a packed crowd in AR118. Art students from Photo I, Basic Photo Imaging and Design I participated. Much of Gonzalez’s work aims to raise awareness about important historical issues and sometimes forgotten healthcare challenges facing Paraguay today. The students were moved by the presentation and asked many questions about art, activism and cultural centers in Paraguay. She discussed possible collaborations with Connie Gibbons, director of the Mulvane Art Museum over lunch and visited the Sabatini Gallery at TSCPL with Zan Popp, curator of exhibits as guide. Later in the afternoon, Gonzales met with senior art students in the Professional Practices class for a informal discussion over coffee. It was a fantastic day! Special thanks to WU faculty member Karen Diaz-Anchante, Assistant Professor, Modern Languages who acted as interpreter during the morning session and senior art student Vivian Mosier who translated for the afternoon discussion. Gonzalez’s visit was sponsored by Partners of the Americas, Kansas Paraguay Committee, Paraguay-Kansas Committee, together with Washburn University, Wichita State University, The University of Kansas, and the Lawrence Art Center.
