Thankful, day #4. #1 I was blessed to have Melvin Hawthorne as my grandpa. He was a hard working man, having farmed for his family from the 6th grade until the day he was diagnosed with cancer and put in the hospital. His loyalty was to God, his family, his country. He played the guitar for the Samaritans (which so happened to be his children, his daughter-in-law, his grandchildren at times, his brother-in-law at times, his sister at times, his niece at times, and those who may not have been blood relatives but were most definitely his family). He provided for his family by going to the fields bright and early every morning (except Sundays), plowing and working the land until it produced soybeans, peanuts, cotton. He would come home late in the evenings, in time to eat with his family and enjoy HeeHaw or another show and the evening news. He had to see what the weather would hold for him the next day. Half the time, he was snoring before the weather came on, but he must have had a built in alarm because he would wake up for the weather. His boots sitting right beside him on the floor. You had to listen to Grandpa, he had a dry sense of humor, but you always knew when he would be cutting up, he would have that grin and usually a toothpick hanging out of his mouth. What a man! My grandpa. #2: myy mothers dad, Melvin Qualls, my grandaddy. He died when I was still young, but I still have good memories. He would ask me, Denise and Tina if we wanted to pick up pecans. In exchange, he would buy us ice cream. We did it and he bought the ice cream for us. He would sit at the end of the front porch and work away all day. I remember how he would have dinner cooked for us when we would come back from church on Sunday mornings. Chicken and rice, a roast, whatever, he always had it ready for us. He was a big man...not sure how tall but I remember how far up I had to look. And the man had no gray hair! He was over 60 when he died, but I dont remember any gray hair - jet black. He loved to sing Patches, which now I think he must have been crazy. Thats a horrible song! So sad. But he could sing. Had that deep voice. He could sing. And smart. Man, was he ever smart. He would study a dictionary for Heavens sake. What person just wants to study a dictionary. I am blessed to have had my grandaddy in my life. #3: my Nannys husband, Richard Thomas. He has been a good man to her. He has given her things she never had an opportunity to enjoy before. He helped her heal from the loss of my grandaddy. He has provided for her. He has loved our boys and called them his grandchildren. He is Pops to most of the grandkids. I love to see him get tickled about something. It makes me smile when he thinks something is funny. Right is right and wrong is wrong with him. You always know where you stand. He has stories to share about the old place that I love to listen to. He has been a good provider to my Nanny, he has loved and cherished her. For that, I am thankful.
