Thanks, Adam Roche "For all of you who don’t know much about the bedroom tax here is my “Bedroom Tax For Dummies”. So sit down and lock yourself in for a few minutes after which time you will achieve enlightenment. There are 4 victims of the bedroom tax – the first three won’t affect many of you but I will talk about those first if you don’t mind. 1. Those victims that had to / been able to move due to the tax. These folk have had to downsize but thankfully have been spared in the long-term the financial week on week costs of this tax. They are victims as, from the stories I have heard, aside from the removal costs, they are now away from their nearest and dearest, their children have been taken away from their schools and links and they have often moved to areas of low-demand housing with high crime where they feel isolated in a completely foreign environment. Maybe these victims are the lucky ones in that they had the option of moving. On to number 2. 2. Those victims who cannot move. Areas like Salford, where I live, do not have the supply of housing stock to “downsize” people, so we are stuck where we are and taxed even though we were moved into properties too large for us many years ago. We just have to pay up and shut up – not only the bedroom tax but also the council tax – living off £50 a week is no quality of life whether disabled, sick or looking for work. 3. Those victims who will not move. You see there are some people who would rather pay the tax than have to be moved away from their nearest and dearest or their home of 20 years. There are people with mental health problems that can’t even consider moving. These people are descending into poverty and despair in every city in this country as we speak. 4. The final victims are you and your children and your children’s children. Whether you are an owner-occupier ( you will want your kids to leave home and have access to social housing if necessary – if they aren’t genius enough to make enough money to buy into the housing market and survive without affordable housing ) or you are in a 2-bed flat and working, do n’t feel safe, in this current uncertain world of temporary employment and global financial insecurity. Don’t get ill either and don’t lose your job. Don’t have kids who may go off to university. Don’t take your house for granted. Don’t expect your kids to have any option other than to stay at home with you. " And so endeth my lesson. Axe the Bedroom Tax – for now and for the future. It is a Tory attack on the poor and no less than that.
