Thanks, Edward! From his original post: Seventy-seven years ago on August 13: The Battle of Shanghai (aka the Songhu Campaign, 8-13, or the Second Shanghai Incident) began, as the Republic of China made an all-out effort to confront Imperial Japanese aggression, on land, especially in the air and even at sea, right in the heart of their own largest commercial center. Raging for 105 days, China paid a terrible price in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of troops and civilians, and the loss of Shanghai followed by her own prewar capital Nanjing, in order to demonstrate to the world her will to resist, despite Japanese claims (by way of their Minister of War Field Marshal Hajime Sugiyama) that Shanghai would fall in three days, and China in three months.
