Thanks for calling or emailing!!!! next 3 days most important!!! URGENT REQUEST TO CALL KEY LEGISLATORS Before March 19th, 2014 Dear Fellow Acupuncturist or patient, Our Bill (H2051 &S1107) sits before the Joint Committee on Public Health. The legislative calendar is at a critical point for bills to get favorably moved out of their respective committees. We need one hundred phone calls to Rep. Or call Vice Chairman Keenans office, [email protected], 617-722-1494 they are the chairs of the committee, it is very helpful to the passage of the bill for you to call these people. Here is a link to the script you could use. Calls are considered more weighty than emails, but you could use the script as a template for an email. Please mention if you are in their district. Other committee members and their districts are listed below: Senator John F. Keenan, [email protected], 617-722-1494. Quincy , Braintree, Holbrook, Abington, Rockland Senator Marc R. Dover, Medfield, Needham Sample Script in Support of H2051/S1107 - “An Act Relative to the Practice of Acupuncture” Please Call Chairman Hon. Representative Jeffery Sanchez at 617-722-2130 and Chairman Hon. Senator John Keenan at 617-722-1494 To receptionist: Hello, my name is _________________. I’d like to speak to the research director or research analyst responsible for H ( House of Reps) 2051/S ( Senate)11107 – An Act Relative to the Practice of Acupuncture. The receptionist will either send you to voicemail or connect you with the appropriate committee staff. If you get a voicemail, simply state your name, the community that you are calling for and state that you are urging Chairman Sanchez or Keenan to report H2051 out of committee favorably prior to the Joint Rule 10 deadline (March 19, 2014). You can then offer either your number as a reply number or refer them to Dan Delaney at 617-251-6774. If you connect with a committee staff person, you can use the following script as a template. Hello, my name is _______________________. I am visiting on behalf of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Society of Massachusetts. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. I live/work in the town of _________________ . I know that this is a busy time but I was hoping to briefly tell you a little bit about acupuncturists in Massachusetts and to request that Chairman Sanchez/Chairman Keenan report H2051/S1107 out of the Public Health Committee favorably. Favorable passage of this bill will broaden access to care for Commonwealth residents, improve health care quality and offer a valuable alternative to medical interventions which may have a high risk of side effects or potential addiction. After the preamble you should try to address the following points and, of course, be willing to answer any questions they may have. If there are policy questions that you don’t know how to answer, that’s fine. You can refer them to me (Dan Delaney) or say that I will follow up with them. • Acupuncturists are highly trained health professionals required to complete 2500 hours of study before licensure. (this may be a good time to say a sentence or two about how you came to acupuncture) • Acupuncture provides proven, high quality, cost effective treatment for a wide range of medical conditions including chronic pain, nausea, PTSD, and substance abuse treatment without the risks of pharmaceutical or surgical approaches • Our proposed legislation seeks to address three key areas: (1) exploration of how acupuncturists can play an effective, cost containing role in health care delivery in Massachusetts; (2) how acupuncturists can be fairly reimbursed for services in the health care/payment reform era; and (3) how patients in Massachusetts can be protected from receiving needle treatments from under-trained and unqualified, unlicensed practitioners. (dry needling) Please remember to thank the staff/legislator for their time.
