Thanks for everyone who participated in the Taiko no Tatsujin - TopicsExpress

Thanks for everyone who participated in the Taiko no Tatsujin Competition 2014! I hope it was up to everyones standards; this is the biggest event of its kind organized thus far in Malaysia and me and Loh Suet Kee wanted to make it as fair as possible. Ill address the elephant in the room first. As the Taiko community in Malaysia was small, the organizer of the competition has dived in before as participants to fill the void. Packer Woo joined the competition and won third place in 2012, and it was the case the year before too. Since the rules allowed for a level playing ground for all players, and most of the participants were okay with it, me and Suet Kee joined in the veteran category. However, after the results of todays competition, me and her have decided that this would be our last time participating in any local Taiko competition, organized by us or not. It would not be fair of us to keep hogging 1st and 2nd place all the time. For that, we apologize. We have tried many ways to make the experience worth it for everyone, including using the entry fee to buy mineral water for participants, prizes and pooling it for tokens. For any future -formal- competitions organized for the Malaysian Taiko community, both of us will refrain from participating. Its high time we give way to new rising stars. Now, the competition itself. The number of participants far exceeded my expectations; though the projected maximum was 32 participants, we were only expecting a total of around 15 combined from both categories. It ended up going to 26 participants, even including players who are really new to Taiko like Bryan Tiong and Teo Tze Han. A shout-out goes to Jiande Teh for helping with recruitment :D Also loved the rousing cheers you guys gave for all participants, even when it was obvious that everyone was tired from the days event. In short, despite some hiccups, thank you all for your support for the competition. Im proud of all of you, and I hope the Taiko community can continue to grow after this! Comments and suggestions for future events (please provide feedback if possible) Changing it into a two-day event: It would stretch out over Saturday and Sunday, so more time can be dedicated if more rounds are needed. Changing the tournament format: Straight elimination meant that some participants would get to play less than others. Round-robin was considered at one point, but it was too time-consuming for a one-day competition. Any ideas? Using self-made sticks: A couple of participants had slip-ups with the string connected to the provided drumsticks, and it is considered that two pairs of self-made sticks, conforming to standard competitive measurements and weight, could be used for upcoming competitions.
