Thanks for sharing Tom Smith: Full length performances of the Woody Shaw Quintet are as rare to find as hens teeth. But leave it to the always satisfying RAITRE Television (Italy) to have this little gem from a 1983 program, featuring to great advantage both Mulgrew Miller and (in my opinion) Steve Turre at his most creative (back when he was still hungry). As always, listening to Shaw is like hearing the entire history of jazz in one guy... from the Kenny Dorham mindset, Miles articulation on the short stuff, hints of the Clifford Brown rhapsodic, shades of that thinner Donald Byrd tone, and just enough Hubbard fluidity to hear the lineage. My goodness, what a jazz player he was... and what a good rhythm section to be so ably supported by the vastly underrated Tony Reedus (a drummer who passed way too early) and bassist Stafford James, who never persuaded me to forget Clint Houston, but was wonderful all the same.
