Thanks for the support of all who voted for me for Idaho Supreme Court. As I told my children, the outcome was a draw. My opponent won the election, I won the debate, and we both get to keep our jobs for the next six years. Considering that in deciding to run I made a sober assessment that my chances of victory were slight, but I wanted to raise my voice about a lack of impartiality on the Court, I feel entitled to claim a private victory. My opponent was called out in public on his conflict of interest; he denied any wrong doing and claimed that the issue I raised was not legitimate; an independent investigation by a journalist resulted in his publicly being condemned by a leading expert on judicial ethics and reported that I had raised a legitimate issue in a judicial election; and I clearly prevailed in a televised debate which, while not seen by enough people to matter in terms of election results, was seen by the majority of people in my profession whose opinions count. This was more than I could realistically have hoped for last summer when I kicked the idea around with my buddies on San Juan Island on vacation. Dreams give us wings, and if one’s dreams are audacious enough, some disappointment is bound to be the price we pay for the view from the heights reached in making our efforts. That disappointment does nothing to diminish the satisfaction of having been in the fight.
