Thanks for your post Rod. Great post and great words. From Rod: Thank you Captain Paul Watson for your informed and rational commentary on this issue. It makes for a nice change from the sensationalist shit being sprouted by some of the media and the Government about this issue. Sea Shepherd Accuses the West Australian government of irresponsibility in the death of a 17 year old spear fisherman. The government should be educating Australians about the fact that sharks are in certain areas at specific times during the year. They should be educating citizens on how to behave around sharks and promoting shark deterrent wetsuits and surfboards. They accomplish very little by their policy of revenge killing except to score political points from ignorant people. Why was this boy attacked? The answer is simply. He was spear-fishing in an area where sharks were known to be active. Spearing a fish spills fish blood into the water and this attracts sharks. The Western Australian governments policy of reacting to a shark attack by immediately killing every shark in the area is simply ridiculous. It is done simply to present an illusion that the government is doing something constructive. People are attacked by a shark because they have no idea on how to behave in shark habitat. I and many Sea Shepherd divers have swam with Great Whites, Hammerheads, Tigers, Bulls, Nurses, Makos and every species that some consider dangerous and we have never been attacked. Why? Because we know what we are doing. The answer is education not revenge. The answer is an understanding of bio-diversity, prey/predator relationships, and ecological realities not pseudo scientific scare mongering. Killing sharks in response to this tragedy will not bring this boy back nor will it prevent such tragedies in the future. The reality is that if you stumble into a potentially dangerous natural situation you survive or perish based on what you know and how you react. Knowledge saves lives. It is as simple as that.
