Thanks so much for your comments on my post about expiration dates. It prompted me to do my own research. According to the Attorney Generals office, the state law doesnt specifically address gift certificates for labor or services. We must, therefore, refer to federal law which states, New federal rules went into effect in 2010 that are designed to protect consumers by restricting gift card fees and gift card expiration dates. These rules apply to two types of cards: Retail gift cards, which can only be redeemed at the retailers and restaurants that sell them; and bank gift cards, which carry the logo of a payment card network like American Express or Visa and can be used wherever the brand is accepted. That is a quote from the FTC. I think if Im working my fingers to the bone myself, I can put expiration dates on my gift certificates. That is very different from walking into a store or a restaurant and buying something.
