Thanks to Amanda Wardrop for the easy activism letter of the day. I added a few more words in greeting and latter part and sent this off to the MLAs: September 8, 2014 Dear Elected Officials (and Christy Clark whos occupying someone elses seat), It is all too clear that the BC Liberals have no interest in getting students and teachers back into their classrooms. The BCTF offered to enter into binding arbitration (which carries risk for both parties) and the government quickly and without due consideration said they would not. How do these actions demonstrate good governance? Who does this strategy serve? Why do these elected representatives feel they are above the law? Why do they not at all feel beholden to the people of BC? Were we watching this unfold from afar, we would understand it better perhaps. We would be able to imagine this happening somewhere else, with a corrupt government, but in BC? It is unthinkable and yet happening in this very moment. MLAs are in hiding unwilling to speak to constituents (some few surfacing only to claim that they were elected to balance the budget when in fact they were elected to represent their constituents). The Minister of Education is incapable of speaking without spinning lies, blaming everyone else and pretending to care. The Premier has no idea what is actually happening in neither in the negotiations nor in the classrooms. These politicians believe themselves above the law. We are treading on dangerous ground. If the government will not heed the calls for binding arbitration then what is it willing to do? The representatives have not been willing to negotiate, nor have they been willing to participate meaningfully in mediation. What is left then? The teachers are once again doing what is in their power to do to get this resolved and have students back in classrooms; they will be voting Wednesday to end the strike as soon as the government agrees to binding arbitration. If Christy Clark wont LEGISLATE (because she broke the law and the law won and will win again), wont NEGOTIATE (it has been 18 months and counting), then shed better agree to allow someone to ARBITRATE. Otherwise, BC Liberal MLAs should cross the floor and sit as independents, than stand and support this betrayal of voters and taxpayers who expect responsible stewardship from their elected officials (except for Christy Clark [who is, did I state it earlier, occupying someone elses seat]). You cannot, by conscience and by reason, set yourself up against the law (otherwise, the law-makers [legislators] become law-breakers) and, by sin of commission and/or omission, erode democracy in BC. What kind of legacy are you leaving behind? Say yes to arbitration and salvage your BC Liberal party. Drop Christy Clark at the same time and choose a new leader who will make a quick settlement with BC nurses, and you will have a chance at re-election. I can assure you that, as a parent of 3, I, along with the parents of the 500,000 children you have held hostage, will ensure that the public (we, the people) will remember how Christy Clarks BC Liberals have trampled both the constitutional rights of our children, by denying them an education, and those of our teachers, by illegally stripping a collective agreement, thus stealing from public education. Say yes to arbitration, and begin making amends for the damage done under Christy Clark.
