Thanks to Anna Zetchus Smith I am sharing ten books that are meaningful to me. You dont have to read this if you dont want to--but it was a fun exercise while waiting in a theater for a movie to start last night. Most of my favorite books appeal to me because of the language more than the story. 1. The Martian Chronicles, and everything Ray Bradbury wrote before 1960. He taught me to recognize poetry in prose. 2. Dracula, by Bram Stoker. The spookiest book I have ever read, yet not a drop of gore. I guess I should add Mary Shelleys Frankenstein too, but for different reasons. And Lost Boys by Orson Scott Card. Look at how I cheat--3 books, one number! 3. The Road, by Cormack McCarthy. Haunting, spare, devastating. 4. incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. Because of her, I wrote my masters thesis on slave narratives. 4. Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse. Youll have to discover why for yourself. :-) 5. My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes by Eve Sutton, because it was my childrens favorite book. We can recite it by heart. 6. The Indian in the Cupboard series and The Fairy Rebel by Lynne Reid Banks. Also a read-aloud favorite. She creates an atmosphere through language that fills my heart. And I guess I should include the Chronicles of Narnia and the Little House Books and The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster--I loved reading chapter books with my kids! (Cheating again...) 7. Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, because Jean Valjean is just so noble. 8. The Richest Man in Babylon, by George S. Clayson. The wisest book ever written on money management, and the foundation of our financial success. 9. Spies, by Michael Frayn. Okay, anything by Michael Frayn. Ditto for Tracy Chevalier. I love the worlds they create, and the language they use to create them. I am always so sad to come to the end of one of their books. 10. The First Two Thousand Years, Third Thousand Years, and Fourth Thousand Years by W. Cleon Skousen, because they started me on my lifelong love for Bible stories. And my lifelong love for his nephew.... So heres my challenge: 1. Bob Bowdon 2. Adam Guillette (because you love these facebook challenges so much...) 3. Michael Esplin 4. Hayley Skousen 5. Valerie Durham (because you have so much free time this week) 6. Erin Jacobsen Jensen 7. Christee Fontanez 8. Lynaya Hernandez (because you know you are just itching to be challenged) 9. Allison Reynolds Nelson 10. Sallee Mathews 11. Autumn Bennett (because you love pink books!)
